Learning the Basics
As the name would imply, infrared asphalt patching is the method of using infrared heating to repair or restore asphalt surfaces. Some of what you need to know about this process is:
It does not take a great deal of time to use this approach to heating certain sections. In most cases it takes less than 10 (approximately 8 minutes to be exact) to soften the asphalt. Of course there are factors that can impact this heating time such as the presence of moisture or the current weather condition.
Generally, the heating process needs to permeate down to approximately 1 ½ – 2 inches, at a minimum. This is essential for being able to utilize this process in order to make actual repairs to your asphalt surface.
Finally, the temperature is the main goal. It is important to reach and exceed a temperature of 425. It is a fairly delicate balance because if the temperature reaches or exceeds 500 degrees, the risk of burning the material occurs. Luckily, with infrared, being able to achieve and maintain a steady temperature level is quite possible.
Keep in mind that this process may not be ideal for areas that have been sealed with coal tar, oxidized or raveled pavement. The smart way to make the most of this project is to find the right experts to work with in order to get the results that you want.
